SIGIL OF BAPHOMET - GOAT, PENTAGRAM AND LEVIATHAN

The pentagram, or commonly seen as a five-pointed star, has been in presence for centuries. It is also used in both white and black magic to raise white energy (angels and saints) or dark energy (devils and demons).

Occultists have largely connected the pentagram with several beliefs

  • Representing the human body- two outstretched arms, two legs, and the head
  • Representing the five senses- sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing.
  • Representing the five elements - fire, air, water, earth and spirit.

Throughout his years of exploration into the “Black Arts,” Anton LaVey had come across Maurice Bessy’s book and included it in his collection. The original source of Baphomet Pentagram, which is the official insignia of the Church of Satan, is from this book. So, he decided to metamorphose this symbol as he felt that it fully embodied the principles of the Church of Satan.

Inverted pentagram

The Church of Satan decided on an inverted orientation. This permits them to place the goat-head inside the figure. Also, according to authors such as Levi, this was the "infernal" orientation and thus appeared appropriate for Satanism. Lastly, inverted pentagram represents spirit subservient to the four physical elements, snubbing the notion that the physical world is stained and offensive and that the spirit should ascend above it.

The Goat Face

The insertion of a goat’s head in the pentagram also goes back to the 19th century. The figure was first depicted in Stanislas de Guaita’s “La Clef de la Magie Noire” in 1897. The Church of Satan explicitly relates it to the Goat of Mendes, which is also known as Baphomet.

The Hebrew Letters

Now around the Pentagon are two circles, one touching the tip of the points of the star and one outside. The five Hebrew letters on the outside of the points of symbol spell out Leviathan, referring to one of the great beasts of Hebrew mythology. The Hebrew letterings were altered to make them look more sharply serpentine and “corrupted with time”.

So, all these things taken together created a symbol that Anton LaVey identified with Satanism definitely. When he started the Church of Satan, usually inverted crosses were considered Satanic, and he realized the importance of these different elements and felt this was a constructive symbol you could link to the Satanism he was creating. It is fascinating to perceive that, earlier to its slight enhancement and implementation by the Church of Satan, this ominous figure seems never to have been used by any who would honor and worship it.

It was this version of the symbol which the Church of Satan had made into cloisonné medallions and it became the typical logo for all Church of Satan materials. They began calling it the “Sigil of Baphomet”. The Church of Satan did file for (1981) and then received (1983) a logo which protects the use of the Sigil of Baphomet with the writing “Church of Satan.”
